Lotus Land

We first came here
for the sun,
dinghy sliding easily
upon the sand.
Bathed in soft,
abundant light,
we had reached
the golden land.
Local blossoms
so sweet, so plenty,
we rode the freeway
into the night,
awakened unable
to walk upright.
Amid the pounding,
primitive din,
we stumbled
back to where
we came in.
Years have passed,
the fog at last
has rolled away,
our ship no longer
in the bay.
