Delta blues men
pull me through
the long night, sharing
their pain, showing
how much farther
I would have to fall
before I could
be like them.
There's always
some girl leaving
on a train,
never to return again,
off with another man,
sung so raw and real.
Guitar and mouth harp
lift me up,
helping me not feel
so bad. John Lee Hooker,
Robert Johnson, Lead Belly,
all are singing
just for me,
taking on my misery,
like Jesus took on
the sins of the world,
healing my affliction,
making the blind man see.
