True Companion

At the motel,
a dog barks
in a room
a few doors down.
Left alone,
he speaks again
and again,
as if his master
might still hear,
only return to walk
and feed him,
reassure and make
him whole. For he
wants to be
a true companion,
fill the empty soul
he scents before him,
as we we've all been taught
to do each evening,
from the very moment
we are born.
