Power Outage

We had been warned
about the loss of power,
a bright red notice
in the mailbox
explaining everything,
saying nothing,
telling us mostly
how lucky we are
to be so well-cared for,
like a sermon
reminding us
of the unseen god.

In the dark,
I awaken
in silence,
only the wind
can be heard
high in the palms,
whispering answers
to all my questions,
even those
I have not yet asked,
becoming part
of my forgotten dream.

The glowing numerals
on my nightstand clock
have disappeared.
When they come back,
they will need resetting;
then I will know
how much time is left,
if there is any
left at all.
