Our new neighbors
are never here,
their patio furniture
bakes all day
in the sun,
like all the days
and nights
they have left,
becoming stale
awaiting their return.

We wait too,
preferring their absence
to seeing them
start all over again,
they have fallen
so far behind.

They will join us
for good, they say,
when they no longer
have time for work,
when they can sit,
watching and waiting,
and then, be more
like us.
