High Wire

We take each step
without a net,
pretending we know
what we are doing,
balancing the years
we have lived
against the time
we have left,
bored with warnings
to be careful,
thinking by then,
we know it all.

The end of our act
was foretold
by those looking down
upon us now.
They walk above
in tearful silence,
not knowing
their own rooms
have been completed,
prepared and ready
for when
they fall.
