Desert Rain

Sudden rain
breaks our long, dry spell,
cast upon us for something
we must have done.
Thunderheads
let go large tears,
spotting first the patio,
then soaking everyone.
Cacti take what comes,
while we hide
under the umbrella
meant to shade us
from the sun.

The earth sops up rain,
an old drunk
on a three-day binge,
whetting a thirst
from deep within.
Lightning and thunder
rumble far off,
warning they won't soon
be back this way
again.
