The sun's heading down
behind the mountain,
leaving heat rising,
the pool still hot,
long after he's gone.

I can't walk barefoot
away from the water,
or leave pets exposed;
only our cacti
seem completely composed.
When I awaken later,
I need something cold;
iced drinks are best
at the end of the day,
everything here
tastes better that way.

We've learned to stay in,
between 12 and 4,
moving slowly
through the shade of the sun;
on his way
toward the mountain,
he knows his work here
is almost done.
