By the Fall

Our neighbors
have disappeared
into the night,
leaving trash piled neatly
by the curb,
an eerie silence seeping
through every door.
They won't return
for months on end,
if ever they come back
again, at all.
It might have been
something we said or did,
though they never asked
where we'd been before.
We're always on edge
this time of year,
forever distracted
by the fall.
