I Never Knew

I never knew
I'd be left waiting
to see what would change
when my friends
had all gone, if the sun
would stop rising
or the moon wane away,
how I'd have to learn
there's not much
I can say.

If they were here now,
I'd tell them true,
how everything's different
without them, without you:
how the earth is still turning,
the sun still shining,
the moon every month
a new sliver of glass,
with love always feeling
like it's going to last,
all mixed up with our being
so stuck
in the past.
