Carnival of Souls

I saw that movie,
where the young woman
goes on living
after her friends are drowned
in the car she was driving.
I see it again in my dreams,
my mother and sister
beckoning me
to join them in the funhouse,
walk through the carnival,
listening to the barker
hawking his freak show,
how we will never be the same
after entering, emerging
in touch with deformity
more than ever before.
My loved ones' faces
are bathed in tears
as they tug at my sleeves,
pulling me in, happy to see me,
anxious to make me welcome,
baptize me, forever,
as one of their own.
